May 13, 2022 Laboratory field trip was arranged on May 13 to typical disaster reconstruction sites in the Kuma River Basin located in sourthern Kumamoto. This area suffered from severe disasters caused by the heavy rainstorm in July, 2020. In Hitoyoshi City, we visited the city center, the Nakagawara Park and the Aoi Aso Shrine which experienced large area of inundation during the flood, and the Ohkaki area and the Nakagami area where flood retarding basins were planned. In the Kuma Village, we visited the Watari area where new levee system was planned and the Konose area where the residential land elevation was to be raised. We also visited damaged sites and reconstruction fields in Sakamoto Town of Yatsushiro City. Almost two years passed, but many reconstruction works were still ongoing. The trip provided an good opportunity for us to learn how the heavy rainstorm threatened people at that hard time. This trip was arranged with full support of Yatsushiro River and National Highway Office, Kyushu Regional Development Bureau of MLIT. The staff members are sincerely appreciated for their kind guidance and detailed explanations during the trip.
